jellyfishlover: A drawing of a cat bouncing into the air with the text ":3" in the top left corner (Chi -- :3)

I'm super charmed by the art direction in this film, so here's a little squee post about a handful of scene layouts I enjoyed (as well as some other miscellaneous items)! This of course means that this post is chock full of spoilers for the 3rd movie, so please proceed with cation!

The order of this is pretty random, because I couldn't quite be bothered to put it into something chronological. Anyways, on to the meat of the matter!

This bit having it's payout just over an hour later is so cool! It really adds to that feeling of everything wrapping up at the end and that sense of everything going back to normal by having this sort of circular close. The set up is also a nice little flare of dramatics! The card suits and such chosen for everyone here is just too good too!

Dutch Angle
The slant in this scene adds so much! It's such a good use of space and the sort of dutch angle really adds to that undercurrent of unease. For some reason in particular this moment has really stood out to me, I think in part because of how well the mood is conveyed here.

Cut-ins ft. Koheita Split scene ft. Senzou + Monjirou
The use of cut-ins and split screens in this movie is amazing…! I really love when works play with positive and negative space and that same sort of feeling occurs here. Except now playing with "foreground" and "background," I suppose? The contrast creates so much interest to scenes that would otherwise just be exposition…! So fun!! And it's used really well to create sort of "asides" in a way that really flows well. The split ones are also quite good at creating a sense of unification and busyness that's not quite overwhelming. The amount of detail put into each individual part is amazing too! Really increases the re-watch value.

Rikichi v Zatto
The build up really makes this scene... I like that it's reminiscent of the sort of openings one would see in an arcade fighting game? I feel like there should be a big K.O. on the screen here after this bit. In fact I could have sworn there was one until re-watching it again. The feeling of it being there was too strong I guess… or I saw a silly edit and adapted that into my memory. *Cough* Anyways.

Hagumi cuteness
I've talked about this scene before, but seriously… the cuteness level… On a slightly more relevant note, I'll basically say the same thing I did before. The visual interest is so wonderful here!! The use of space is fantastic!!! And it's really cute!!!!! It would have been really easy to just have this be another "circle around" moment like some other scenes (which are also very cute!!!) which is part of why I'm so charmed by it.

Day to Night GIF
I don't really have anything to say about this specific bit other than that I think it's cute, but having this section here does give me an excuse to yap about something slightly connected to scene layouts-- the transitions between them!! When talking about scene transitions in animated mediums the transfer of momentum / movement between them tends to comes up. Which is fair because those transitions always rule, so I won't bore you with that, specifically, but! The use of hard-cuts between scenes focusing on the 1st years and scenes focusing on the adults are handled in such a nice way, I think!! A lot of the time it feels very "variation on a theme"-esque, especially later down the line, so it doesn't quite have such a jarring mood whiplash to it (which in a way is still that transfer of momentum, I guess?), but instead compliments the previous scene despite any difference in tone they may have… The pacing in general is just really lovely and I think that this sort of play between different groups really works in it's favor… Argh, I'm not sure I'm quite capturing what I want to here, but hopefully it makes enough sense!! This is mostly a note for my future self to pay more attention to it on next re-watch…!!

Sonnamon bullying 1 Sonnamon bullying 2 Sonnamon bullying 3
Another bit I've talked about before, but seriously, what a lovely set of scenes…! The framing is just too good. Framing Zatto as visibly trapping Sonnamon in despite their actual standings in the scene… the low camera sweat drop… absolutely amazing. It's super fun! Actually, after viewing this movie for the first time, I wrote a bit about it down in a journal and these scenes left such an impression that I ended up sketching it there. It's so striking!
Sketch
Truly the most important scene... Thank you past self?

Various other things:

Zatto laugh.... Wow....
Zatto's animation here is just so lovely… Watching it for the first time I was hit with an overwhelming urge… "Oh my god… I need to gif this…. and somehow hang it on my wall…"

Ending scene
Big fan that the solution to not having all the characters fit here is to have the 5th years doing leapfrog(???) in the background. It's too fun… It's too cute… What the heck.

RIKICHIIIIIIIII
The composition here... It's so close and personal… and the change in his expression… Rikichiiiii-kuuuunnnnnn……!!!! Uwah!!!!

Tenkichan...
I am. restraining myself so this doesn’t turn into a 5 hundred word post about Tenki but. This scene. The cuts. The superimpositioning. Of his unimpressed expression. It's too good. That is all.

Paper cutouts 1 ft.Chouji Paper cutout 2 ft.Koheita
I really love this bit!! Something about "real" and "fake" visuals coming together always charms me!! The paper cut outs!!! Such a fun way of visualizing this!!!!! The textures!! The drop shadow!! I'm like 99% sure this was created digitally rather than being actual photographs, but the paper art aspect of it is still ridiculously cute.

Anyways, thank you for reading all this! This… ended up a bit of a retread from the last time I wrote about this movie somehow haha! One day I'll get around to talking about the other two… but for now I'll leave it here!!
