The mention of the Nivkh also threw me for a loop, I thought Atoi was more Ainu from what I've gathered so far. While I would say it was a shoehorned attempt at adding an interesting fact to a character, I don't think Amako-sensei is someone to haphazardly mix up the Nivkh and Ainu, especially when she's been pretty accurate at displaying non-Japanese culture(though it could be an honest mistake, Japan still mistreats various ethnic groups to this day). I agree that it's the downside of tsudoi- when it comes to more sensitive info like this it seems... odd at a first glance. It doesn't come off as wrong per se, just vastly different from the other tsudoi facts stated. When I mapped out all of Atoi's info, I had a brief thought of him being mixed descent with the two groups rather than be one or the other. For all of history they've essentially have been neighbors, and have historically acted as intermediaries for Russia and Japan(and China, when interacting with the Manchu peoples). I read somewhere from tsudoi that Chouji knew how to read Indonesian, so I have hopes that this sort of melting-pot viewpoint would make my mixed Atoi vision reasonable.
Regardless, I didn't write this in because 1)I was just spitballing and 2)Maybe this is way too much detail for a minor character in the series- I don't think even Doi has that much history! Maybe I should add that in anyway? And that's a good idea, I'll have to review the episodes again to pick which ones or else I'll mark all of them lol
